Dick Todd, president and founder of Universal Background Screening (www.universalbackground.com), was recently named to the board of directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona.

The appointment builds on a long history of personal and corporate support for the youth mentoring organization.

“The connection between our two organizations spans four decades,” reflected Todd.



In the 1970’s Linda Searfoss, the previous president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona, asked for assistance with the organization’s volunteer background checks. From that time through today, Universal Background Screening underwrites nearly all of the organization’s background check costs.

Todd received the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona Barry Starr Award in 2002 for his support of the agency.

Last month, he was honored to expand that commitment to the organization in a leadership capacity.

“It is a privilege and honor to serve Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona as a member of the board of directors,” said Todd.

“Today, more than ever, the work of this outstanding organization – to bring caring mentors into the lives of children – has a lasting impact on our community.”

Since 1955, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona has provided support, guidance, friendship and fun by matching children to volunteer mentors. Big Brothers Big Sisters employs a professional staff that carefully work with both the volunteer and the child to ensure a dynamic, fulfilling and memorable experience.

Todd, a former Phoenix Police detective, founded Arizona Investigations in 1972. As interest in background checks increased for employers and volunteer organizations, the company narrowed its focus on background screening and drug testing throughout Arizona and the greater southwest.

He operated the company until he sold it in 2002 to an investment group led by Valley entrepreneur Kevin Olson. Since that time, Universal Background Screening has expanded throughout the nation as a leading provider of background checks, drug testing and related Human Resource services to clients in 44 states.
